I just signed to a few groups in there and I comment using my specific page a little bit every day. that way I collect likes and eventually I'll have quite a few of them at the end of the year. Meanwhile those guys are exposed to my stuff and I get some website visitors. I'll check your product...

The most important rule to follow is to give the visitor the best experience possible with exactly the content that he was looking for. Do that for every page that you promote and you won't be wrong. Of course don't neglect all the other important rules...

I once sold a site I owned (PR3, one month I had 70K unique visitors, for the key phrase I was no1-2 on google) for 8300 pounds. I got the offer and I took it. It's the ranking and traffic that talks. If you have tons of traffic, even if the site is ugly and full of crap, it's worth more. Good luck!

By the way, use something with lots of white, like every HUGE website on the net like Facebook, Google, YouTube etc. White background and clean view is always better than dark or too creative designs.
