How can I convert old DBX files to PST for Outlook?

I found some old Outlook Express DBX files from my previous Windows system. Now I am using Microsoft Outlook and need to open those emails again. Outlook is not accepting the DBX files directly. The folders include Inbox, Sent Items, and some personal email folders. I also want to keep attachments and email dates safe during conversion. What is the easiest way to convert DBX files into PST format for Outlook?

Why DBX Files Do Not Open in Outlook

DBX files come from Outlook Express, while Microsoft Outlook works with PST files. That is why Outlook does not accept old DBX folders like Inbox, Sent Items or personal folders directly.

How to Solve It

Method 1: Manual Method

If the old Windows system still has Outlook Express, open the DBX files there first. Then try exporting or moving emails through Outlook if both programs are available. This method is free, but it can be slow and may not keep everything clean on newer systems.

Method 2: Tool Method

A simpler option is GainTools DBX to PST Converter. It lets you add DBX files, preview emails, choose the output location, and save them as PST files for Outlook. It is useful when attachments, folders, and email dates need to stay safe.

Why Errors Usually Happen

  • DBX files are copied incompletely
  • Outlook Express is missing
  • Wrong DBX folder is selected
  • Old files are damaged

Final Tip for Beginners

Keep a backup first. Test one small DBX folder before converting all files.
