How I’m Building Charleston’s Cycling Culture — One Ride, One Rider at a Time | Daniel Russell-Einhorn

Hey everyone,

I’m Daniel Russell-Einhorn, the founder of Daniel’s Custom Cycles in Charleston, SC—and I wanted to share a bit about how cycling in Charleston has evolved, and why I believe bikes are doing more than just getting people from A to B. They’re building community, confidence, and even reshaping the city.

I opened my shop not just to build custom bikes (though I love that part), but to create a space where people feel welcome, empowered, and connected through cycling.

🚴 A Shop That’s More Than Just Sales

My shop started with a simple mission: build bikes that fit riders—not just their bodies, but their lifestyles. But as time passed, I saw something amazing happening: people began hanging out, talking bikes, joining rides, and teaching each other.

Now, Daniel’s Custom Cycles is more than a bike shop. It’s a community hub. A place to learn, share, and get inspired.

👥 Group Rides That Welcome All Levels

One of the best things we do is host group rides around Charleston. These rides aren’t just for hardcore cyclists—they’re for everyone. We make them beginner-friendly, no-drop, and focused on fun, not competition.

We ride in the mornings or on weekends, and there’s always a mix of commuters, families, and weekend warriors. If you’ve ever thought about joining a ride but didn’t know where to start—this is your sign.

🔧 Workshops to Help You Ride Smarter

Let’s be real: bike maintenance can be intimidating at first. I’ve been there. That’s why we run hands-on bike maintenance workshops in the shop. We cover:

  • Fixing flat tires
  • Adjusting brakes and chains
  • Urban safety tips for new riders
  • Understanding your bike’s basic parts

It’s all about making riders feel more confident and self-reliant—because a little knowledge goes a long way on two wheels.

🚲 Advocating for a Better, Safer Charleston

I’m also involved in local bike advocacy efforts. That means talking to city officials, partnering with community organizations, and pushing for:

  • Safer bike lanes
  • More public bike racks
  • Affordable cycling gear and repair programs
  • Smarter traffic laws for cyclists

Charleston has made progress, but we still have a long way to go—and I’m in it for the long haul.

🌍 Why This Cycling Culture Matters

For me, bikes are more than machines. They bring people together. They get us outside. They improve our mental health and reduce traffic, pollution, and stress.

Cycling can help create healthier, stronger, more connected neighborhoods—and it’s already happening in Charleston.

Daniel Russell-Einhorn
