NID Exam Pattern and Syllabus

National Institute of Design (NID) is a premier government institute in India that offers programs in both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Applicants are eligible to attend classes only once they’ve cleared the entrance exam and interview. The exam, Design Aptitude Test (DAT), is divided into two stages - DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. The DAT Prelims is a written exam which combines both objective and subjective type of questions.



DAT Prelims:

Part 1: 70 marks (MCQs) (OMR sheet)
Part 2: 30 marks subjective questions (visual or written format)
No negative marking


DAT Mains:

100 marks (english)
No negative marking


The exam consists of 3 stages:



First stage: Written exam of 100 marks (the written part is divided into two stages - objective 70 marks and subjective 30 marks). The applicants who qualify the written exam are called for the second round (clearing the cut-off set by NID for that year)



Second stage: Studio test (100 marks)

drawing/sketching
Modelling
Group discussion
Presentations




Third stage: Interview is held at the same center and post these three stages, a final list of selected candidates is prepared.



NID is known for not having a set syllabus and they are considered to be unpredictable - breaking the pattern now and then. The exam is divided into two stages - NID Prelims and Mains. The prelims has two parts - MCQs (70 marks) and subjective questions (30 marks). The paper may not follow a particular theme, but keeping the basic topics in mind while attempting past papers will get you into the process of answering the kinds of questions.
