Can positive content really outrank negative search results on Google?

I've heard that one of the most common reputation management strategies is creating and promoting positive content to push negative results lower in search rankings.

Has anyone actually seen this work in practice? What types of content tend to perform best—news articles, blogs, social profiles, videos, or something else?

I'd love to hear examples from SEO professionals, PR experts, or business owners who have dealt with reputation issues.
