Hi everyone,

I’ve been spending more time in Amsterdam lately and, as someone who grew up around Indian food, I’ve been on a bit of a mission to find places that serve the kind of Indian dishes that feel closer to home — or at least offer a solid balance between flavor and authenticity.

There are a fair number of Indian restaurants scattered throughout the city, especially near tourist-heavy areas, but not all of them deliver when it comes to depth of flavor or variety. A lot of places tend to stick to the basics — chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, naan — which is fine, but I was hoping for more thoughtful spice use, regional variety, and attention to the kind of small details that make Indian food special (like proper tempering, freshly ground spices, fresh breads, etc.).

One place I came across that’s worth mentioning is a spot near the city center called Samrat Indian Restaurant. It’s tucked into one of those older Amsterdam streets and has a quiet, low-key vibe. The menu leans toward North Indian classics but isn’t limited to just that. I tried a vegetarian thali on my first visit, which was a good way to sample a few different things at once — lentils, sabzi, a paneer dish, rice, and roti. The food wasn’t drowned in oil or overly salty, which is something I’ve noticed at some other spots. It felt like something you might get at a home gathering rather than a restaurant that’s dialing everything up to appeal to tourists.

If anyone wants to check it out, they’ve got a site where you can see the full menu:

And for those who still prefer calling to reserve: (+31) 020-624-6033

That said — this thread isn’t just about one place. I’d love to hear from others who’ve found good Indian food in Amsterdam. Whether you live here or have just visited, what spots stood out to you? Are there any that serve more niche or regional Indian dishes .

Let’s use this thread to build a useful list for anyone in Amsterdam who’s on the hunt for genuinely good Indian food. Would be great to get input from fellow foodies or even those who’ve been to India and have thoughts on how these Amsterdam spots compare.
