How long does a OneDrive cross-tenant migration usually take?

This is a question I get asked constantly, and honestly, the answer is "it depends" — but let me break down the factors that actually drive the timeline. Data volume is the obvious one, but it's not just about total terabytes; it's about file count too. A tenant with a few hundred GB spread across millions of small files will often take longer than a tenant with a few TB of large files, simply because of API call overhead and throttling limits Microsoft imposes.

Beyond volume, the complexity of permissions and sharing structures adds significant time. If your environment has heavy external sharing, nested permissions, or nonstandard folder structures, expect the migration to take longer than a straightforward account-to-account move. Network bandwidth and Microsoft's throttling policies also play a big role, especially during business hours.

As a rough benchmark, small migrations (under 50 users, moderate data) can often complete in a few days including validation. Mid-sized migrations (a few hundred users) typically take one to three weeks when done properly with batching and delta syncs. Anything larger, especially with complex permission structures, can stretch into a month or more if not planned carefully.

Using a purpose-built solution makes a real difference here. We used the DRS Softech Tenant to Tenant Migration tool for a mid-sized migration, and its incremental sync capability meant we weren't blocked by long cutover windows — end users kept working while data synced in the background until the final switch.
