I don't suggest directory submission anymore for link building, it will most likely to be considered as link scheme.
To answer your query though I think approval from directory sites comes with a price. Considered it as an advertisement for your business. Choose the best directory site though but as much as possible stay away from it and think of another way to build backlinks.

I also do not in favor of directory submission and getting links from those low profile directories.
Approval time depends on directories. Some are auto approval, some take time up to 2 or 3 months.
