Looking for the Best Indian Restaurant in Amsterdam? Here’s One Worth Talking About

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion for folks who are either living in Amsterdam or just passing through and happen to have a serious craving for Indian food. If you're like me, you’ve probably already done the usual rounds — tried a bunch of spots in De Pijp, a few hidden gems in Oost, and maybe even some takeaways in the Jordaan. But the real question is: Where can you actually find the best Indian restaurant in Amsterdam?

After spending the last couple of months hunting for that one place that really gets it right, I stumbled upon Cuisine of India, located not far from Amsterdam Zuid. What caught my attention wasn't the décor or location — it was the depth of flavor in their dishes. And trust me, I’m usually skeptical of places that try to cater to a wide audience and end up toning down traditional recipes.

Here’s what stood out:

1. Traditional Flavors Without Compromise

The first thing I noticed was how they manage to stay true to the regional flavors. For example, their Kerala-style fish curry actually had that signature kick of kokum and curry leaf — not the tomato-heavy gravy you find in many generic Indian restaurants. The dal makhani had clearly been slow-cooked, and the use of spices wasn’t just for show — it was balanced, thoughtful, and warming in the right way.

2. A Range of Options for All Diets

If you're vegetarian or vegan, this place has a bunch of options that aren’t just "vegetarian versions" of meat dishes. Stuff like baingan bharta and chana masala are done properly. Even the rice and breads felt like someone cared while making them — not just sides tossed in as filler.

3. Authenticity Without Pretension

What I personally appreciated is how they don’t overdo the "fusion" thing or try to modernize the cuisine just to impress. It’s just good, honest Indian food. You get the sense that the kitchen is run by people who actually cook this way at home.

4. Good for Dining In or Ordering Out

While I’ve mostly gone there for dine-in meals, a few friends of mine have used their delivery, and the feedback has been solid. Everything arrived still hot, no spillage, and the flavors held up even after transport — which says a lot, especially for Indian food.

I’ve already added them to my list of reliable places to go when I want Indian food that tastes like the real thing. That said, I’d love to hear from others:
  • . What are your go-to dishes when ordering Indian food in Amsterdam?
  • . Anyone else been to Cuisine of India and tried something I should get next time?
  • . Any other spots you think are worth checking out (especially if they specialize in a particular region)?
