Hey everyone,
I thought I’d start a thread for anyone searching for the top Indian restaurants in Amsterdam. There are so many places across the city offering Indian food — some more authentic than others — and it can be hard to know where to go, especially if you're looking for more than just the standard tourist experience.
I've been trying out a number of places recently, and one that stood out — particularly for those looking for traditional North Indian dishes — is a spot called Indian Restaurant Gandhi.
I came across Gandhi somewhat by chance — it’s not far from Central Station, and I ended up walking in after a long day. What really struck me was how familiar the food felt. The menu covers all the usual suspects — curries, biryanis, tandoori dishes — but there’s a noticeable focus on keeping things close to traditional preparation styles.
Here’s what I experienced:
It’s located near tourist-heavy areas, but surprisingly doesn't feel like it’s geared toward tourists — which, in Amsterdam, is rare.
More details (menu, background, etc.) are on their site if you're interested:

And if anyone wants to book or check hours, they’re reachable at:

So I’m curious:
Let’s help each other (and future Indian food lovers) navigate the Amsterdam food scene with a little more confidence.

What Makes It Stand Out?

The menu covers all the usual suspects — curries, biryanis, tandoori dishes — but there’s a noticeable focus on keeping things close to traditional preparation styles.
Here’s what I experienced:
- . Curries are rich, but not greasy. You can actually taste the layered spices, which says a lot about the cooking process.
- . Their tandoori chicken came out hot from a clay oven, not something every place uses properly.
- . If you're vegetarian, there’s a full section of dishes that aren’t just “afterthoughts” — the Paneer Butter Masala was solid, and the Aloo Gobi had just the right texture.
Vibe & Location
The interior is pretty relaxed — no flashy decor, just a calm, sit-down setting that doesn’t feel rushed. It’s definitely the kind of place you could take a friend who's curious about Indian food, or go alone and enjoy something warm on a cold day. It’s located near tourist-heavy areas, but surprisingly doesn't feel like it’s geared toward tourists — which, in Amsterdam, is rare.

Now Over to You
I’m only scratching the surface here. The whole reason for this thread is to build a better picture of the top Indian restaurants in Amsterdam based on real experiences — not just Google reviews or influencer posts. So I’m curious:
- 1. What places have impressed you?
- 2. Are there smaller, lesser-known Indian restaurants you think deserve attention?
- 3. Any specific dishes you always order when you go?
- 4. And how do you feel the city handles authenticity overall?
Let’s help each other (and future Indian food lovers) navigate the Amsterdam food scene with a little more confidence.
