Which telescope to choose for a beginner?

Hello everyone! I want to buy a telescope. The main thing is that I can look at the Moon, planets and, if possible, deep space objects. I've seen many models, but I'm afraid of making mistake. Should I buy an automated one or something simpler? What can anyone recommend? I want compact telescope because I often go out of town and would like to take it with me. My budget is average, but I don't want to overpay for features that a beginner doesn't need. I'd be grateful for your advice!
