It’s definitely a bit jarring to look at your phone and see "SOS" where your signal bars should be. Essentially, this means your phone has lost its connection to your specific carrier but is still "awake" enough to piggyback off other nearby networks for emergency calls. Most of the time, you’ve just hit a dead zone or your carrier is having a brief hiccup. Usually, just walking a block away or waiting a few minutes for the signal to find you again does the trick.
