What is Zakat?

The word “Zakat” in Arabic means purification and growth. In Islamic practice, it refers to the purification of wealth by giving a specific portion to those who qualify to receive it. Zakat ensures that wealth is shared within the community, preventing greed and economic inequality. It is an act of worship that benefits both the giver and the receiver, creating harmony and compassion in society.

Importance of Zakat in Islam

Zakat has both spiritual and social benefits. Spiritually, it purifies the soul from selfishness and materialism, reminding Muslims that their wealth is a trust from Allah. It strengthens faith, instills gratitude, and encourages generosity. Socially, Zakat plays a vital role in supporting the underprivileged, reducing poverty, and promoting equality. By redistributing wealth, it ensures that basic needs such as food, clothing, and healthcare are met for everyone, fostering a stronger and more caring community.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the value of helping others, saying:

“Whoever fulfills the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Zakat Percentage & Nisab of Zakat

The standard Zakat percentage is 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth that has been in your possession for a complete Islamic year. This applies to savings, gold, silver, investments, and business goods, after deducting any immediate debts or liabilities.

Before paying Zakat, it is important to know if your wealth reaches the Nisab — the minimum amount that makes Zakat obligatory. For gold, the Nisab is 87.48 grams (approximately 7.5 tolas). For silver, it is 612.36 grams (around 52.5 tolas). If the total value of your wealth equals or exceeds the Nisab and a full lunar year passes, you must pay Zakat.

Zakat on Gold – How Much Zakat on 1 Tola Gold?

Gold is one of the most common assets on which Zakat is payable. To calculate Zakat on gold, you need to determine its current market value. For example, 1 tola of gold weighs 11.664 grams. If the current gold price is PKR 18,000 per gram, the total value of 1 tola is PKR 209,952. At 2.5%, the Zakat due would be around PKR 5,249.

How to Calculate Zakat in Islam

Calculating Zakat involves a few simple but important steps. First, list all your assets, including cash, gold, silver, business stock, investments, and receivables. Next, deduct your liabilities such as debts and pending bills. The remaining amount is your zakatable wealth. Finally, apply the Zakat percentage of 2.5% to this amount.

For convenience, many people use a Zakat calculator to get accurate results. The Renal Care Foundation offers an online calculator that automatically updates according to gold and silver prices, ensuring you meet your obligation without errors.
